Background light scattering in optical fibers

Abstract

At low frequencies the forward light scattering spectrum of optical fibers is dominated by several series of lines associated with thermally excited elastic eigenmodes of the cylindrical fiber structure.1 However in fibers where these lines are narrow, i.e., in aluminum jacketed or stripped fibers, a background light scattering component can be detected between them. This new component is also present in the backward light scattering spectrum. Since momentum conservation greatly increases the Brillouin scattering frequencies in the backscattering geometry, the spectrum of background light scattering is not obscured by the lines from the elastic eigenmodes, and the background component can be isolated and studied quantitatively.
