Abstract

Silica-based single-mode waveguides on silicon substrates are promising for use in various fiberoptic systems due to low propagation loss and compatibility with single-mode optical fibers.1 Using the waveguides, we fabricated the first practical integrated-optic ring resonator, which operates in the 1.55-μm wavelength region and can be butt-coupled to input and output single-mode fibers. We describe the performance of the ring resonator and its successful use in stabilizing optical frequencies of DFB laser diodes.
