Abstract

Active-passive ocean color measurements are defined as the concurrent acquisition of active (or laser-induced) spectra and passive (or solar-induced) spectra within essentially the same oceanic target footprint. Essentially, then, conventional passive remote sensing is being performed, while at the same time laser surface truth measurements are being conducted within the same footprint. Such simultaneous measurements allow, for example, the determination of the chlorophyll content of the upper water column using highly specific laser-induced fluorescence and water Raman backscatter.
