Abstract

The microwave fiber-optic communications links using a direct modulated laser diode have a limited operation bandwidth due to a wideband impedance matching problem. The frequency response of the laser diode is presently difficult, exceeding 14 GHz except driving at catastrophically high-bias conditions.1 The LiNbO3 electrooptic modulator (EOM) has achieved a frequency response of 24 GHz at a switching voltage of Vπ in the 10-11-V range2 using a coded electrode. We report on a direct detecting 1-km 21-GHz 1,3m fiber-optic system using a velocity matched rfenhanced Mach-Zehnder EOM, which has low Vπ and a wide bandwidth.
