Abstract

There has been much recent interest in the development of small diode-pumped solid-state lasers. Such lasers are of interest as sources in coherent laser sensors and in optical communication systems because of their (a) small size, (b) high degree of monochromaticity, and (c) high efficiency. One such laser to appear commercially is the Lightwave Electronics model 120 which utilizes the diode-pumped ring cavity geometry.1 We have compared the performance of this laser as a source for coherent homodyne and hetero-dyne interferometry with that of a stabilized single-frequency Spectra-Physics model 117 He-Ne laser.
