Abstract
Although Marcatili and Schmeltzer's1 theoretical treatise on the propagation characteristics of the modes of circular cross-section hollow dielectric waveguides has been the basis for the majority of the work on CO2 waveguide lasers and hollow core fibers over recent years, surprisingly little experimental verification of the different aspects of the theory has been undertaken. In particular, no validation of the phase constant expressions generated by the theory has been established, although these expressions have been widely used in waveguide laser resonator design.2,3
