Abstract

4-aminobenzophenone (ABP) is a promising organic material for nonlinear frequency conversion in the visible and near IR. Phase-matched second harmonic generation (SHG) in crystalline ABP was carried out, and a conversion efficiency of 14% for 1,064-μm radiation was obtained in a 1,5-mm thick sample. The ABP crystal was found to be transparent from 420 to 1600 nm and had a laser damage threshold exceeding 30 GW/cm2 (for 30-ps Nd:YAG pulses). Powder data had indicated that the benzophenone derivatives have high second- order nonlinearity. For example, 4-aminobenzo- phenorte, 4-amino-3-nitrobenzophenone, and 3, 4- diaminobenzophenone were found to have SHG efficiencies 360, 33, and 2.7 times that of ABP
