Polarization-maintaining fiber coupler for coherent DPSK systems

Abstract

To exploit fully the advantage of coherent optical transmission systems the polarization states of the signal and local oscillator (LO) must be matched. An obvious solution to achieve polarization coincidence consists of the use of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). We report here the first performance evaluation of a 1.5-μm PMF coupler and its use in a 400-Mbit/s heterodyne differential phase shift keyed (DPSK) system.
