Abstract
The output power density of a Q-switched Nd:glass laser is limited to 250-500 MW/cm2 by the surface damage of optical components in the resonator, whereas the B-integral limit is 2-10 GW/cm2. The peak power can be increased to the B-integral limit, if the energy is extracted in short pulses, preferably <1 ns in duration.
