Abstract

Higher-power diode lasers are essential to new optical systems such as erasable disks. A window structure laser,1 which has a crescent active region in its gain region and a flat one in the vicinity of its facets (windows), seems suitable for such use. However, this structure was proved to have transverse mode instability,2 This instability is caused by optical mismatching between the window and gain region. We present an improved window structure, which is characterized by its high-power operation, stable transverse mode, and high reliability.
