High-average-power fiber bundle laser

Abstract

Average output power of high-repetitive solid-state lasers is limited by heat conduction, because a high-input pumping power causes strong thermal distortion in lasants. To eliminate this thermal problem, a bundle of LHG-8 glass fibers was used as the lasant. The laser fiber had a Nd2O3 concentration of 8 wt. %, 100-μm core diameter, and 110-μm clad diameter. About 1300 fibers were bundled as shown in Fig. 1 and side-pumped by two flashlamps.
