Abstract

Single-frequency operation of the dye1,2 polyphenyl 1 (PP1 ) in a ring laser is reported for the first time (Fig. 1), we believe, giving outputs tunable over the range from 376 to 409 nm with a peak output power of 170 mW at 395 nm. Recent improvements in argon-ion laser technology allowed for sustained operation of a large frame tube at increased discharge currents of up to 65 A (above the conventional 55-A limit), which considerably enhances the UV outputs from this laser.
