Abstract
Vahala et al.1 showed theoretically that the linewidth enhancement factor of distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor lasers can be reduced; hence the linewidth becomes narrower when the laser oscillates at a wavelength shorter than the gain peak. The linewidth measurement of such wavelength-detuned DFB lasers has been performed, and the linewidth reduction has actually been observed.2,3
