Abstract

As semiconductor lasers reach bandwidth limitation based on relaxation oscillations, the need for high speed optical modulators will increase. Integrated optical technology has made great strides in addressing the need for modulators well into the GHz regime. The best guide-wave modulators are, however, still limited by the difference between the transit time of the modulating signal and that of the optical signal.
