Abstract

The organic crystal, 2-methyl-4-nitroanillne (MNA), famous for its high optical nonlinearity, shows promise, especially in frequency doubling. Unfortunately, the large dispersion of refractive index in this material has prevented phase-matched frequency doubling for the critical phase matching or 90° phase matching in a bulk crystal. However, in a waveguide structure, this dispersion can be compensated by a dispersion with the thickness of a waveguide. We prepared a very thin MNA single-crystal waveguide on a fused quartz substrate and observed phase-matched frequency doubling of a Nd:YAG laser (1.064 μm; 1 mj/pulse). This is the first report of a very thin MNA single-crystal waveguide for phase-matched frequency doubling.
