Dye laser frequency control by projection holograms

Abstract

The operation of a transversely pumped dye laser can be significantly influenced by the presence of a high frequency spatial gain modulation. The best known example of this effect is the distributed feedback laser (DFL).1 In our experiment, shown in Fig. 1, the modulation is introduced in the direction perpendicular to that used in DFL schemes and the grating period is substantially larger, being tens of microns instead of λ/2. This type of modulation can be readily produced by projecting a real amplitude or phase grating into the dye cell. Also, the spatial and temporal coherence requirements of the pump beam are far less stringent for this scheme compared with those needed for generation of DFL which use interferometric techniques.
