Abstract
Most investigations of stimulated Raman processes have concentrated on measuring the properties of the forward traveling Stokes and anti-Stokes waves. Although backward stimulated Raman scattering was observed as early as 1966, it has not been generally recognized that a total pump depletion to the backward Stokes wave of larger than 50% can be obtained in a single focus experiment, particularly in a Raman medium such as H2 that has a large forward to backward steady-state gain asymmetry.
