Abstract
The recording layer of optical disks is protected from scratches and dust particles by a transparent overcoat layer which keeps these defects out of focus. The servo control objective lens design requires negative spherical aberration to counter the effect of focusing through air and then a refractive layer. This limits the thickness range of the overcoat layer within which this lens can properly focus. A tester was built to scan absolute thickness and thickness variations of this layer on spinning optical disks.
