Abstract
Optical parametric amplification of near-IR signals is expected to play a role in optical communication and computing devices but should also become a valuable tool in time-resolved spectroscopy. In this respect it has been demonstrated that organic crystals are particularly good candidates for such effects due to their high nonlinearities and good optical properties, such as transparency in the visible and the near IR, high birefringency, and high damage threshold. We have carried out a study of a new organic crystal, NPP [N-{4-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol], using femtosecond gigawatt peak-power pulses of 100-fs duration at 620 nm and white light continuum extending up to 1.6 μm.
