Abstract

A rare gas halide excimer laser was first applied to laser radar (lidar) in 1978 for stratospheric ozone measurement.1 Recent development of high-power reliable excimer lasers makes it possible to use them in various types of lidar, Excimer lasers have the following advantages as a light source for lidar: (1) efficient lasing in the UV region, (2) fast repetition rate (500 Hz) and high average power (100 W), (3) excellent ability in pumping Raman, dye, and solid-state lasers, and (4) solar-blind effect in the UV region.
