Abstract
Using a short coupled cavity, a multimode laser diode can be operated in the single longitudinal mode, and a single-mode laser diode can be operated with a higher side-mode suppression ratio at a higher modulation rate. To obtain good mode-selection results, it is necessary to increase effective feedback of the short coupled cavity (SCC). But this is not easy because the laser diode beam divergence is large and the cross section of the active region is small. An indium concave spherical reflector used by Preston et al.1 and a graded-index (GRIN) rod lens with reflective CrAu coating on the far end employed by Liou et al.2,3 converge the beam into the active region of the laser diode. We have chosen another method and obtained better single-longitudinal-mode operation. The method uses an excellent AR coating on the facet of the laser diode and a planar mirror with a high-quality multilayer dielectric film as the SCC reflector, employing PZT to adjust the length of the SCC to optimum and to tune the laser wavelength.
