Abstract
Since 1960 many developments have improved the protection of the eye and skin against secondary laser radiation. The focusing characteristics of the eye increase light concentration to dangerous levels. As power can increase 30,000 times from cornea to retina, lasers operating in the visible and near-IR region are particularly dangerous. As damage to the eye is permanent or very long lasting, protecting the eye is of paramount importance.
