Abstract

We have performed experiments to observe the IR laser-assisted reaction of electronically excited Hg* (63P1) with ground state HgBr2 (1∑g+) to form the radical HgBr(B) (2+). The Hg* is produced by resonant UV (253.7-nm) excitation of atomic Hg. A high-intensity Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) is then used to excite the Hg*-HgBr2 collision complex. The reaction is monitored by detecting the well-characterized blue-green fluorescence from the electronically excited product HgBr(B).
