Abstract

A high-reliability laser1 source is required for single-mode optical communication systems, especially for submarine fiber-optic systems. STC has developed the inverted rib waveguide (IRW) InGaAsP laser’ emitting at 1.3-μm wavelength with 80-mA threshold at room temperature which can emit single-mode output power up to 25 mW and be directly modulated at well above 1.2 Gbit/sec. A fully hermetic package2 with a single-mode fiber tail has been engineered. A reliability program set up to determine the onset of wear-out failure of these devices includes wafer validation, chip reliability and overstress tests, and package reliability.
