Abstract

A new multiphoton technique involving phase- matched third harmonic generation in unfocused laser beams has been used to determine VUV oscillator strengths for three levels in xenon and VUV absorption coefficients in mixtures of xenon with argon and krypton. In the experiments to be described, third harmonic light is produced on the high-frequency negatively dispersive side of three- photon resonances. Observed multiphoton ionization (MPI) signals are dominated by dimer absorption of third harmonic photons plus one or more additional photons to complete the ionization process.
