Abstract

Chromium-doped GdScGa-garnet (Cr:GSGG) exhibits broadband fluorescence in the 700-900-nm region, Struve et al.1 initially reported growth of the material and demonstrated lasing at 790 nm with laser pumping. Flashlamp-pumped lasing of a small 3.9- X 40-mm Cr:GSGG rod was subsequently reported by Zharikov et al.2 with a threshold >20 J of input energy. We report on the flashlamp-pumped lasing performance of a 5- X 76-mm Cr:GSGG laser rod and present evidence that excited-state absorption is an important limiting factor in its performance.
