Abstract

Excited inner-shell atomic states produced by collision-free multiphoton processes are candidates for the generation of coherent energy in the x-ray range. The physical mechanisms leading to the production of such states can be studied by observation of the final ionic charge states,1 the optical radiation emitted,2 and the energy spectrum of the released electrons.
