Abstract

The molecule I2 is one of the most thoroughly studied diatomic species, and numerous spectroscopic and kinetic data are available. The potential curves of the lower-lying states are now characterized with extremely high precision.1 Iodine has also been the subject of many laser investigations, and although both pulsed and cw optically pumped2,3 B→X lasers have been reported, there has been only a single brief paper4 describing amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in I2(B→X). In this paper we describe results of a detailed study of the spectroscopy and kinetics of ASE in I2.
