Abstract
The sensitivity of semiconductor lasers to back-reflections has created the need for optical isolators which are compatible with waveguide structures. Isolation is normally achieved by a 45° nonreciprocal polarization rotation in a bulk magnetooptic material, but when the material is In the form of a waveguide the inherent linear birefringence restricts the rotation to an oscillation about the Initial polarization direction.
