Abstract

The object of the U.K. project is to mount a comprehensive series of experiments to characterize the performance of the FEL in both the amplifier and oscillator configurations. A uniform wiggler enables a relatively high-gain performance to be achieved over a wide range of output wavelengths, and in the 10.6-µm region well-developed laser technology is available for optical components and diagnostic facilities.
