Abstract

A high-performance magnetooptic recording disk has been developed as the result of cooperative research between Sony and KDD. The recording material is an amorphous magnetic film of Tb-FeCo, the magnetization of which is vertically aligned. The Tb-FeCo film is deposited onto a plastic disk by the sputtering method. It has a Kerr rotation angle of 0.35°, a Curie temperature of 190°C, and an amorphous-crystal transition temperature of 240°C. The disk has a double-sided structure, and each side consists of protective layer, magnetic layer, and protective layer, as shown in Fig. 1.
