Abstract

At the end of 1978 a five-year Project on High Power Lasers was started by the Italian National Research Council. The objectives were (1) to investigate and promote the use of lasers in material processing for automated manufacturing systems; (2) to study medical applications of lasers mainly in the fields of general and endoscopic surgery and phototherapy; and (3) to study high-power laser technology and develop prototypes for mechanical and medical applications. The aim was also to assist Italian industry in exploiting laser processing technology and in developing laser manufacturing systems.
