Some important optical signal-processing devices, such as electrooptic modulators, frequency doublers, and mixers or parametric oscillators, demand highly efficient quadratic nonlinear materials. The limitations of presently available inorganic crystals, such as small nonlinear coefficients for KDP or low-optical-damage threshold for LiNbO3, appear critical in view of the stringent requirements of integrated optics: efficient operation is then expected to take place under cw pump power of the order of 100 mW and over an interaction length of <1 mm.
