Abstract
Intensity-dependent birefringence (IDB) of liquid crystals (LCs) is an important issue because it may strongly influence the practical applications of liquid-crystal-based devices, such as phase retardation plates and light valves. Diffraction fringes associated with laser-induced nonlinear effects of some homeotropically aligned LC cells have been investigated recently at Ar+ and He-Ne laser wavelengths.
