Abstract
Extracavity doubling and sum-frequency mixing of cw dye laser radiation and ion laser lines in KDP-isomorphs have been used1 to generate tunable UV radiation in the 285-390-nm range at power levels of 0.005-0.8 mW. Lithium iodate has also been used2 in extracavity doubling, reaching 6 mW of UV output as the 90° matching angle is approached. We report angle matched intracavity doubling in LilO3 inside a single-frequency ring dye laser with a peak useful output of 7 mW (13 mW generated inside the crystal) and a tuning range of 302-324 nm with one crystal in initial experiments. Our technique may be extended up in wavelength to >405 nm (where fundamental single-frequency dye outputs become available3) by use of two to three other LilO3 crystals (with different z-axis outs) and down below 302 nm with other angle matched crystals and is readily adapted for sum-frequency mixing.
