Abstract

We report the results of a novel subpicosecond measurement performed on cis-stilbene in the vapor phase. As will be described, we extended a well- known pulsed laser technique1,2 into the 10-3-sec time regime and chose to focus renewed scientific attention on the dynamics of stilbene photoisomerization. We believe this measurement will establish the technique of gas-phase multiphoton ionization as a viable and potentially powerful subpicosecond probe of intramolecular dynamics.
