Abstract

Following the proposal of Yariv and Winsor1 for a Macb-Zehnder magnetostrictive interferometer to sense magnetic fields we fabricated a number of devices using pure nickel and nickel-alloy for the magnetostrictive sensor. Film magnetic characeristics were measured and compared with sensor performance for both annealed and as-deposited metal films and for alloy films. Best performance was obtained with nickel-iron alloys.
