Abstract

Photorefraction is manifested when a plane monochromatic optical beam of wave vector k scatters from a refractive-index grating An cosk3 • x, which arises in a crystal because a grating of trapped electrons (or holes) of density p cos(kg • x + <j>) creates a static electric field pattern, also of wave vector kg, which in turn creates An yia the electrooptic effect.1 The electron charge grating is normally created by intersecting monochromatic beams whose wave vectors differ by fcs.
