Abstract
The characteristics of bulk acoustic waveforms generated by pulsed (~5−100-nsec) laser irradiation of metal surfaces have already been studied.1,2 In this paper, we show how expressions developed in seismology can be modified for use in the description of laser-ultrasonic surface waves. Equations from seismology predict the normal displacement on a surface at some distance from the application of a monopolar force. For predictions involving laser ultrasonics, the expressions are extended to take into account the finite time duration of the force and the interaction area on the surface of the metal.
