Microsurgical anastomosis using a CO2 laser: a preliminary report

Abstract

Lasers have been used in surgery for several years. The introduction of the laser into medicine is recognized as an advance in technology which has resulted In a better surgical technique to control bleeding (coagulation), resect or excise large tumors (gynecology, neurosurgery, gastroenterology), restore sight to the blind eye (opthalmology), and remove large cancers quickly where otherwise large amounts of blood loss and spreading of the disease are expected. The laser (primarily at high powers) has been utilized to decrease surgical time and decrease foreign body reaction.
