Abstract
Atmospheric turbulence may significantly degrade the image of an object below the diffraction limit of the imaging system's aperture. A probabilistic method for overcoming this image degradation has been proposed by Hufnagel and Fried.1 It consists of making short exposure images of the object. At some instants the wave front distortion upon the receiving aperture may be negligible. If a short- exposure (<5-msec) image is made, it will appear to be diffraction-limited.
