MILES; a laser training aid

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The multiple integrated laser engagement system (MILES) has now reached technological maturity and is currently being deployed at over 20 U.S. Army- bases in the United States, Europe, and Korea. Using GaAs lasers, silicon detectors, and microprocessor logic, MILES has revolutionized tactical infantry and armor training by providing a degree of realism not previously available. This paper will discuss some of the essential physics of MILES, including laser/detector beam geometry, atmospheric scintillation effect, code theory, and eye safety constraints.
