Phase-compensated optical communication by four-wave mixing

Abstract

A theoretical study was conducted concerning the performance of a degenerate four-wave mixer as an adaptive optical element1 in a line-of-sight optical communication system. Planar phase fronts propagating from a distant optical transceiver were corrupted by Kolmogorov atmospheric turbulence2,3 located between the mixer and the transceiver. The four-wave mixer accepted these perturbed phase fronts and reflected a phase-conjugated4 replica back through the same atmospheric turbulence.
