2-substituted nitropyridines: a new class of efficient nonlinear organic materials

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We have studied several new classes of nonlinear organic material including donor-acceptor substituted pyridines and enones (chalcones and benzylidenes) by second harmonic generation (SHG) in powders with a Nd:YAG laser. Among these, many materials belonging to the 2-substituted-nitropyridine and donor-substituted nitrochalcone families have been found to have SHG efficiencies up to an order of magnitude greater than urea as well as high optical damage thresholds.
