Abstract

We report operation of the 750-and 850-nm laser transitions in Ho3+ and Er3+ doped lithium yttrium fluoride (YLF) pumped by a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser. Resonantly pumped upper laser levels yield high efficiency: to date 20 and 40% overall conversion has been demonstrated to 750 and 850 nm, respectively. Radiative lower level decay minimizes thermal loading, enabling operation at high average power densities; an extracted average power of 16 W/cm3 has been sustained in an uncooled crystal with excellent beam quality.
