Abstract
In the first reported operation of a free electron laser at Stanford in 1977, 3µ optical radiation was generated and amplified in an interaction with a 43 MeV electron beam in a periodic transverse magnetic field.1 In addition to the demonstration of laser operation, we were motivated in these experiments by the desire to secure sufficient data to evaluate the models proposed for the interaction. Towards this end, data was accumulated on the time averaged optical and electron momentum spectra, the optical power output, and the dependence of these quantities on cavity length.2
