Abstract

A holographic recorder was flown on the NASA Space Shuttle (SL-3 mission) for documenting the solution growth of triglycine sulfate (TGS) ferroelectric crystals under low gravity conditions. Crystals were grown sequentially in individual sealed temperature programmed cells with front, rear, and side thermal windows. Each crystal experiment was holographically recorded (over ~24 h) by two orthogonal cameras, one recording collimated light holograms, the other scattered light holograms. A single 25-mW (0.6326-μm) He-Ne laser is the holographic source, as well as illuminator for a separate real time schlieren system, data linked to the ground.
