Abstract

A number of recent studies have suggested that proportionality exists between the deposited dose and emitted Cherenkov light from megavoltage x-ray photon beams from a medical linear accelerator (LINAC) during radiation therapy. Based upon this observation, a number of applications including superficial dosimetry and dosimetric quality assurance of static radiotherapy beams have been demonstrated. In the current study, we extend this application to video-rate optical dosimetry of dynamic intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans. The gold standard IMRT and VMAT plans according to the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group 119 (TG-119) plan are experimentally measured and compared to the expected dose distribution from the treatment planning system (TPS) for proper accuracy analysis.
