Abstract

A diode-pumped, passively Q-switched, single-mode Yb:YAG microchip laser with a very low pulse timing jitter has been demonstrated. The laser consists of an Yb:YAG/Cr:YAG diffusion-bonded chip with a separate VBG outcoupler. A <110>-cut for the Cr:YAG was chosen in order to polarize the output. The spectral output was single frequency with a linewidth of 20 picometers. The 55 microjoule, 830 picosecond pulses were synchronized to a 20 kHz command signal within ±18 nanoseconds using a pulsed diode that bleached the Cr:YAG layer in the microchip.
