Abstract
A Ba Y2F8 crystal doped with thulium ions has been grown and extensively investigated to exploit widely-tunable laser action at 2 µm. The potential wide-tunability of the Tm:Ba Y2F8 crystal was demonstrated by performing room-temperature laser experiments. A tunability range from 1849 nm to 2059 nm, strongly limited by the finite bandwidth of the adopted laser mirrors, has been obtained. A slope efficiency of 32% and a maximum output power of 0.7 W were also demonstrated.
